“MV STEN ODIN” – the Resplendent Pearl of Chemical Tanker

On Aug 22, the first 17500DWT IMO II Chemical & Oil Tanker delivered to Norwegian Owner – Rederiet Stenersen AS, marks a big stride in building Chemical & Oil Tanker in Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd (KASC) ’s history.

The Main Particulars of the Tanker: Loa: 155.50 M; Bm: 23.78M; Dm: 13.80M; Design Draft: 9.50M; Design Speed: 15 Knots; Class: DNV-GL.

Leading Technology   Excellent Performance

The Tanker is jointly designed by KASC, Marinform AS and StoGda Ship Design & Engineering. The unique slender Semi-V shaped hull form and soft-nosed vertical stem with less demand for ballast water especially in lightship or partially-loaded conditions, realize the effects of minimized sailing resistance, higher propulsion efficiency, reduced comprehensive fuel oil consumption under multi-loaded conditions. Direct Driven low speed permanent magnet shaft generator, equipped with Active Front End (AFE) frequency converter, improves the power factor and generator’s effectiveness, providing power demands for the whole ship power system during normal seagoing. World’s first marine biggest power high density lithium ion battery energy storage system effectively collects & stores surplus electricity to discharge to grid while needed and shave the power peak, minimizing starting frequency of standby generator by means of crest reduction, reducing power system energy consumption. One-Touch “Take Me Home” system can avoid the potential suspension, sailing delay and Safety Risk while Main Engine fails; Flexible coupling uninterrupted shore power operation system is firstly application in China, which can achieve seamless switchover with the impact of power outage being avoided.

The structure optimization based on accurate FEM for whole hull reduces the steel plate consumption in way of cargo area with lightweight effectively being deducted and loading capacity been maximized, e.g. 15% cargo capacity more in comparison with other similar deadweight tankers. The Vessel can carry 14 kinds of chemicals simultaneously and is suitable for nearly thousands of different chemicals, crude oil, petroleum products.  EFFECTIVE TANK CLEANING in compliance with DNVGL’s requirement has been implemented, which can effectively minimize the pollution from previous residue to the newly loaded cargo. 

High Integration    Maneuvering As Will

With the conception introduction of cruise control normally applied in car, the speed of the vessel can be freely set up by automatically adjusting the running state of Main Engine and CPP as per vessel’s own condition and marine situation; Automatic navigation can be achieved by the Track Control system, pre-set navigation route on ECDIS and Propulsion control system via automatic adjustment of M.E RPM and CPP pitch in line with real time sailing condition. In case the Main engine fails, the Shaft Generator will be converted as electromotor by One-touch fully automatic clutch to disengage the Main Engine so as to achieve the function of Take-me-Home. More than 4800 Monitoring and Alarm points deployed around the whole vessel raised the automation level of the vessel to a great extent by means of highly integrated centralized control to the cargo liquid system and Engine Room Equipment; the integrated design of Electronic-injection Main Engine, CPP and High Efficiency Twist Rudder greatly improved the maneuverability and propulsion efficiency.

Safety, Environmental Friendly, Energy Saving and High Efficiency 

The EEDI of the Vessel has met the Phase 3 emission requirement. The SCR configured into Main Engine and Auxiliary Engines systems will reduce the NOx from the exhaust gas into nitrogen and water, which effectively eliminated those hazardous substances from waste gas and reduced air pollution consequently to satisfy the requirement of Tier III. Open loop water lubrication applied in stern tube bearing prevents the pollution risk of lub. oil leakage from conventional lubrication system; Nitrogen Generator can create inert protection to cargo holds via isolating oxygen from flammable and explosive liquid cargos to ensure the transportation safety; Deployed Pipe Tunnel on deck offers effective protection to the whole vessel’s liquid cargo system; Widely application of Variable Frequency Control technology to those high power electrical equipment, such as Bow Thruster, Nitrogen Generator and Hydraulic Pump Station etc; ER ventilation system and Box Cooler Fresh Water Cooling system can be Frequency Controlled based on environment and system demands. Waste Energy Regenerator Heat Exchanger applied in air conditioning air return duct i.w.o. living quarter will greatly reduce the power consumption and running time of air conditioning compressors by means of temperature adjustment of inlet fresh air. Spare space for LNG tanker and filling also reserved in consideration of potential duel fuel M.E. 

Brilliant Appearance   High Practicality 

For the sake of compliance of Ice 1A Class requirement, the ice region on shell plating is coated with glass flake thick paste type paint, whose super thick and super hard strength film will effectively avoid potential damages to the shell plating due to high strength friction to maintain the integrity of painting under severe ice marine condition; New phenolic epoxy special Interline 9001 coating applied inside cargo tanks is the first ever in China on new building Chemical Tanker, more pyknotic and smooth surface after the thermosetting reaction can effectively prevent the soften and reaction of coating owing to the infiltration from loaded cargo and efficient loading will be improved and also makes the cleaning easier. In comparison with common special painting, round-voyage will be feasible for tanks coated with this Interline 9001. 

Artistic and Comfortable Decoration

It is worth mentioning that the vessel overthrows the conventional design in the wheelhouse. Panoramic French window offers super broad vision and the blue walls and ceiling creates an impression of ocean melts into the sky at the horizon. Home Decoration Conception was introduced into the cabin design with abundant color and strong texture, which sets the tone of cozy and homelike; Solid wood furniture, up-to-date green marine color sand epoxy floor makes the living quarter elegant and comfortable environment for crews; the only 45 db practical cabin noise level measured during sea trial, which is far below the stipulation of rules with 55 db, creates a real quiet and pleasant home for crew at sea. 

17500T Chemical Tanker is ground breaking work in building chemical tanker for KASC. Centralized application of massive advanced technology and system achieved the world leading position of this vessel in terms of energy saving, environment protection, reliability in maneuvering and cargo collecting capability etc. Another “Resplendent Pearl” is born today.
